On Sunday, the Gents 19+ Club Championship was played on the Greetham Valley Lakes Course in baking conditions (having been delayed from July by appalling weather) and there was very tight competition between the top three players who were all playing off very similar handicaps.

The eventual winner was Mark Luxford (19hcp) with a gross score of 91 from his round which was remarkably steady. Mark was particularly strong over the back half which he competed in only six over gross and this could have been even better if he had avoided problems on the last.

Just behind Mark was Malcolm Abbott (19) with a score of 92 which was pleasing as his start was somewhat shaky with three double bogeys over the first six holes, but a birdie on the 10th gave him an excellent start to the return section and an exceptional bogey-par-par finish gave him a good finishing score.

In third spot Bruce Strickland (20) also scored 92 but it was Malcolm's strong finish that pushed Bruce down in the countback calculation.

Bruce was steady throughout but a visit to the water on the 6th did his card no favours although subsequent pars on holes 12 and 14 put him back into contention.

On Sunday the Ladies also played on the Lakes for their delayed Bunny Cup Qualifier and there was a win for Jacqueline Wilson (32) with a score of 33 points. Jackie had a couple of sub-standard holes on the front half but, that apart, managed to enter scores on all the other holes to keep her at the front of the field.

Close behind, also on 32 points, was Theresa Black (31) following a round in which she was delighted to notch two pars (on the 6th and 14th) although the par 5's did cause her considerable problems.

Those holes apart, Theresa was pleased to finish so close to the winning position.

Third place went to Lorraine Gray (40) with an excellent total of 32 even after failing to convert on four holes on the return half: Lorraine was very steady going out with scores on all holes (including three bogeys to help her scoring level) but fell off the pace over the last few holes of her round.

On Saturday, also in the baking Bank Holiday weather, a Qualifying Stableford on the Valley course saw David Lambert (16) come in first place with 38 points after a very shaky start to his round.

Although David had a birdie on the 3rd, he had several double bogeys (and one triple) on the front half and was not looking in particularly good shape.

On the return, however, David saw his fortunes reversed as a further birdie (on 11), meant that he completed the back half in only four over gross to shoot him up the leader-board.

Wayne McPherson (24) also scored 38 points for the runner-up position but his round was almost played in reverse (compared to David's) as his score of 24 points on the outward section had him at the top of the table but his form slipped on the return as errors crept into his game.

Third spot was taken by Jack Chisholm (10) with his total of 39 points: Jack was in very steady form with nothing worse than a bogey score throughout and a birdie on the 14th for good measure.

On Wednesday the Ladies played their Mid-Week Medal and Dee Ginnity (11) came in at the front with a nett score of 67. Dee was an absolute model of consistency as she played the first in regulation and dropped only three shots over the first half.

This steady play improved even more as Dee completed the back nine in only two over gross for an excellent score of nett 67.

Lesley Young (15) took second place some five shots behind Dee with her score of 72 in a round which was only complicated by the par 5's which caused some problems. Lesley had a total of seven pars which was pleasing but double bogeys on 5 and 16 were somewhat of a dampener on an otherwise steady round.

Pat Jamieson (15) took the last podium position with her score of 73 and she was particularly thrilled to score a birdie on the troublesome 5th after having started with a bit of a wobble on the first two holes where she dropped four shots to the card.

Once the early holes were out of the way Pat was reasonable steady and ended up with five pars to go with her birdie.

In the Martin Boughton Summer Order-of-Merit, Paul Thwaites is currently leading with a total of 112 points followed by Wayne Porter and Daniel Kettle (both on 90) and Lewis Chisholm on 86. In the Jackie Friend Ladies OoM Ellie Haughton has a big lead over Dee Ginnity.

On Saturday the Gents Friendly Team played away at Burghley Park Golf in perfect conditions at the wonderful tree-lined parkland course.

The course was in excellent condition enabling play at a very high level. At this time of the year, the challenges of putting out a side becomes more difficult and the captain was pleased to welcome Graham Smith and Darren Child (both regular 'A team' players), with both achieving convincing wins with their in-form partners, Malcolm Boyd and Craig Allan.

Other successful pairings included Sam Bull and Steve Roche winning 2 up, and Ian Cunningham and Chris Proudman winning 4 and 2.

All other matches were taken to the line and, in spite of a commendable performance by Bill Skinner who partnered Packa Risi, Bill and Packa were unable to break down the strongest pairing of Burghley Park captain Bill O'Driscoll and Mike Beaumont.

Burghley Park had fielded a very strong side with the majority of their players out on the course three or four times a week but the strength of their squad did not deter the Greetham team from pulling off, undoubtedly, their best away performance this season with a 4 to 3 win.

The holiday period sees a host of events for Juniors and Isabella Condie was part of the Lincolnshire Handicap Team who, for the 4th year running, were crowned Champions at Trent Lock. Isabella played her part to the maximum with a fine 4 and 3 victory.

On Friday, the Seniors had a joint Away Day with the Ladies at Rutland Water. The very hot weather clearly affected the scoring with only one player breaking 30 points.

The best overall score (and best Lady) was Sandy Beggy with 33 points with Micky Fish returning the best score from a Senior with 29.

The winning team was lead by Liz Haughton with Sandy Beggy, David Nicol and Martin Boothman. Sandy Beggy completed her hat-trick by also winning the Ladies Nearest The Pin with Neil Bradbury taking the Seniors prize.
