Last weekend a Mixed Stableford Qualifier was played on Greetham Valley Golf Club's Valley Course and, for the first time in more than a few years, Tim Nixon (hcp 15) found himself at the top of the leader-board with a great score of 24 points.
Tim sank two birdies (one in each half) and was delighted to have played so steadily with a total of six pars to augment his score.
In second spot (on countback) was Phil Etheridge (17) with a score of 40 points. Phil started poorly as he failed to score on the first but thereafter was a model of consistency and a finishing burst of pars on the last four holes lifted him in the countback calculation as he completed that section in only three over gross.
Just beaten on countback was Dave Thompson (9) who was in sparkling form on the back half which he completed in only one over gross (thanks to a birdie on the last) but he was slightly erratic (by his own standards) on the front nine.
Stephanie Craft was the best placed lady with 37 points and she will be kicking herself as she failed to score on the 14th (although a birdie on the 16th did offer some compensation).
The club's Ladies played an Invitation/Guest format on Wednesday in brilliant weather in a slightly unusual 2-ball Texas scramble competition.
There were mixed combination teams of home and away players but the overall winners were Lesley Young (GVGC) and Cathy Lee (Toft GC) with an excellent total of 65.6 whilst the home pairing of Ellie Haughton and Yasmin Bass came in second with 66.8.
Third place went to Sheila Douty and Julie Lighthowler (Elton Furze) with 67.8. Additional prizes were awarded for the straightest drive (nearest the line) which was won by Mavis Lucas whilst Nearest-the-Pin awards went to Rachel Southwell (6th), Gilly Grant (12th) and Cathy Lee (14th).
The Ladies Scratch Team won 3-0 against Sleaford at home on Saturday and with one match still to play (away at Belton Park) the team are currently top of the Scratch League South.
Over 70 of the more mature members of the club entered Round 1 of the Seniors Championship which was played on the Lakes course, off white tees, (with Round 2 to come on the Valley course next week) and there was an unexpected winner as Fred Want (22) took top spot with a nett score of 71.
Fred started very steadily with a par on the first but was disappointed as four double bogeys crept on to his card on the outward half.
Returning home however, Fred was delighted to score two pars on 10 and 11 before running into problems on the 13th and 16th (both played into the wind) before finishing strongly. In the runner-up position Neil Lowndes (10) also scored 71 but was just beaten on countback.
Neil's card consisted of only pars and bogeys (plus a birdie on the 17th) but he played his better golf on the front half which came to haunt him in the countback calculation. Third spot went to Mike Maffei (13) who also totalled nett 71 with a very steady round but he was undone in the countback assessment as he bogeyed the last three holes.
There was a very welcome return to the top of the table (fourth position) for Fred Aspin (19) who scored nett 72 and this included a stunning eagle on the 13th. With the Seniors Champion being decided on the best aggregate gross scores over the two rounds there are four players within two shots of each other with Neil Lowndes registering gross 81, Steve Anderson 82,
