Teigh's Holy Trinity is the next church that we will be exploring in our series of articles looking at the history of Oakham-based churches and chapels.

Holy Trinity is the Teigh parish church for the tiny village of Teigh, which has a population just over 40. It is set in a lovely location, with views across miles of pasture to the west, and the elegant Georgian Rectory.

This rectory has more than just a pretty face however. It was in fact used by the BBC for its adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, release in 1995 starring none other than the iconic Mr Darcy, Colin Firth. Jennifer Ehle starred alongside Colin Firth as Elizabeth Bennet.

Do you remember this being filmed, and did you watch the series?

The rest of the church tells an equally unique story:

The tower is all that remains of the medieval church, following a huge fire in the 18th-century. As such, entering the main body of the church, visitors find a slightly more modern, modest interior that is light and airy, with pews arranged facing each other along the north and south walls, in the style of a college chapel.

On the west wall is a triple-decker reading-desk and pulpit with an extraordinary trompe d'oeil window painted onto the wall behind it.

Above the altar at the east end is a painting of the Last Supper from the school of Otto van Veen.

This church, like Oakham's All Saints' Church, is part of the Oakham Team Ministry.

The other churches are: Whissendine, Ashwell & Market Overton in the north, and Langham, Braunston, Brooke, Hambleton & Egleton in the south. We will be covering more of these in our historical exploration of local churches in the coming weeks.
