The Rutland policing team have warned drivers that thieves have been targeting keyless cars in and around Oakham.

Mid way through last week, two vehicles were stolen, one from Oakham and one from Ashwell. Both were keyless Range Rovers.

Keyless vehicles are often easier for thieves to target as they can use the long range signal of the device used to unlock your car to gain entry even when the 'key' is inside your house.

Keyless theft (otherwise known as relay theft) is relatively simple. All it requires is two small boxes of electronics, which thieves can use to open your car in as little as 60 seconds.

A spokesperson for the Rutland Police said: "Over the last few days there have been two vehicles stolen from the Oakham area and Ashwell. Vehicles being targeted are Keyless Range Rovers."

How can you keep your car safe?

The Rutland policing team said: "The defender signal blocker is ideal to keep your keys out of range from any relays which criminals will use to gain entry."

Alternatively, keep your key as far away from your car as possible, and as far away from the windows and doors of your house, making it harder for criminals to detect and amplify your key signal.
