By Grace Kennington 22nd Jul 2026
As part of the Festival of Archaeology, Oakham Tours is offering the brand-new Roman Oakham Walking Tour, celebrating Rutland's Discovery of the Decade.
Earlier this year, Rutland County Council (Planning Application 2026/0066) shared details of the remarkable Roman villa discovered in Oakham, confirming the prediction that, around AD 300, Oakham was the centre of a prosperous Roman villa farm estate.
Step back 1,700 years and discover Roman Oakham. Join us as we explore the key locations of this fascinating landscape, including:
- The site of the Roman villa
- The Roman shrine
- Roman roads
- Water mills
- The Corieltavi palisaded hillfort
The guided walk lasts approximately 2½ hours and is completely free—a perfect activity for the summer holidays.
Tour dates:
- Thursday 23 July
- Tuesday 28 July
- Friday 31 July
- Wednesday 5 August
Booking is essential. Details and reservations can be made via Eventbrite by searching for "Roman Oakham".
