People in Rutland are being reminded to take part in this year's annual canvass of electors and respond, if needed, so that they can vote in future elections.

The annual canvass is held between July and December each year and helps Rutland County Council to update the local electoral register by identifying anyone who is missing from the list. Those who are not listed on the letter can then be offered the chance to register.

With Police and Crime Commissioner Elections due to take place in May 2024, this is an important opportunity for residents to make sure they can cast their vote. People who have moved home recently are particularly encouraged to take part in the canvass and check who is registered to vote at their new address. 

If you receive a canvass letter with incorrect information, it means that the information we hold is potentially out of date and a previous resident may still be registered to vote at your address. You must respond with the correct information as soon as possible.

Local councils are required by law to organise and oversee the annual canvass in their area. Councils must make repeated attempts to contact electors who do not provide a response to the canvass, including door-to-door canvassing.

Mark Andrews, Returning Officer for Rutland County Council, said: "It's important that everyone who is entitled to vote can do so. Please make sure you provide us with the necessary information so you can participate in future elections."

Canvassers are now out visiting homes across Rutland. They will be carrying formal identification and will show this whenever they knock on doors. Anyone who prefers not to speak to a canvasser will be able to complete the canvass online.
