A growing taste for local produce is driving plans for a deli at a popular Rutland Garden Centre.

Since re-opening back in mid-May, the Welland Vale Garden Centre in Uppingham says business at the garden centre in Glaston Road has been "exceptionally busy."

Annie Burns, director of Welland Vale Garden Inspirations, said: "People's feedback has been very positive and they comment on how safe they feel while shopping with us."

A range of measures were introduced to help ensure public safety, but opening hours were shorter than before lockdown.

The re-opening initially saw a 3pm closing, but now closing time has been put back to 5pm, though the centre still closes on a Monday.

Annie told Nub News: "We have also been busy behind the scenes preparing to open our new Deli at The Orchard Cafe."

The deli is due open at the beginning of August.

Annie said: "Don't worry, you can still come and enjoy coffee, cake and spot of lunch (amended menus) but you can also come and shop some of your favourite independent and local food and drink products.

"We will have fresh bread daily from Kings Cliff Bakery and Bisbrook Artisan, fresh meat from March House Farm and Launde Farm, Cheese from Lincolnshire Poacher, fabulous wines from Bat and Bottle, Gin from Rutland Gin and Brentingby, coffee from The Roastery.

"There will be gluten free and vegan ranges plus a wide choice for antipasti entertaining, to a meal for a family supper.

"We have searched hard for the beat local produce and where we haven't found local we have found independent family businesses so we know we are supporting other small businesses."

Annie continued: "During this difficult year, so many businesses have been stretched and we feel more than ever we need to support each other to help us all through.

"Not only that but we really do have so many wonderful businesses right on our doorstep and we want to offer a safe and friendly place to come and pick up some shopping.

"This is always something we have wanted to do and felt the timing was right as so many people are looking for local produce under one roof."
