Work is underway on a series of developments at Oakham Castle, designed to give visitors an insightful glimpse into the past.

Visitors can look forward to an informational bronze 3D model, glass vestibule entrance and sensory garden, all of which are expected to be completed by the end of May 2020.

Mounted on a stone plinth, the bronze 3D model will reveal how the castle and its grounds would have originally looked some 800 years ago.

It will be accompanied by information providing additional historical context for visitors as they arrive at the historic site.

An eye-catching glass vestibule will also replace an older wooden version that was once a feature of the castle.

The specially-designed new entrance will feature an engraving of Rutland's Latin motto, "Multum In Parvo", which translates as "Much in Little" – referring to the fact that Rutland is one of the smallest but most culturally rich counties in the country.

Completing the improvements will be a new sensory garden, planted to reflect the greenery that would have historically grown outside the moat and across the castle grounds.

Changing with the seasons, the garden will provide visitors with a reflective space and a range of different sights and smells throughout the year.

Oakham Castle is owned and operated by Rutland County Council, who have secured funding for these improvements from The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

"These developments will help people to better understand the castle's 800-year history and further enhance their enjoyment of this unique site.

"We can't wait until the changes have been completed and are sure they will prove tremendously popular."

The work has been made possible by a £2.1 million grant secured by Rutland County Council from The National Lottery Heritage Fund in 2014. Funding has so far helped to maintain external grounds and develop an award-winning educational service.

Constructed between 1180 and 1190, Oakham Castle is recognised as one of the finest examples of Norman architecture in England. The Council-owned site is free to visit and open six days a week. The Castle offers a varied programme of events for adults and children, as well as being a popular wedding venue.
