First osprey of season returns to Rutland Water

By The Editor 18th Mar 2021

The first osprey of the season have returned to Rutland Water.

On Tuesday afternoon the Rutland Osprey Project announced on Facebook: "One of our breeding females from an offsite nest, 25(10), has returned today! She was the first bird to return last year too and paid a visit to the Manton Bay nest. Hopefully, Maya and 33(11) won't be too far behind!"

Every year, well over 20 Osprey return to Rutland Water after spending the winter in Africa, 3000km away.

This year, viewing of the birds will be easier thanks to an new webcam system that has been installed following an appeal which raised £16,000.

The system allows people to view the osprey at Manton Bay from the website of the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife trust.

In the meantime, the trust is gearing up for World Osprey Week, which Nub News reported on yesterday.
