Historic Rutland pub plans April re-opening

By The Editor 25th Mar 2021

A 400-year old Rutland inn is planning to re-open several weeks from now.

The historic Blue Ball at Braunston says things still remain 'up in the air' with regards to government guidance, but its plans to re-open on Friday April 16, but only for outdoor service, in line with government legislation.

Landlady Pip Nall explained: "The government roadmap gives Mon 12 April as the earliest potential date for reopening of hospitality - outdoors only - and Mon 17 May at the earliest for indoors.

"We hope and plan to reopen at weekends (only) outside from Friday 16 April, and inside from Friday 21 May."

"No one yet knows whether/what rules and restrictions may be in place nor whether tiers will be operation. All of which will impact on who/how we can seat and serve here, as will the weather and consumer confidence.

"However, we plan to reopen for weekend drinks on our Garden Terrace (weather permitting) from Friday Evening to Sunday Afternoon as soon as it's allowed."

The popular hostelry, which is well known for its food, is also assessing its menus.

Pip continued: "If it seems feasible we will also offer an simpler Weekend Terrace and Takeaway Menu for informal dining. And possibly Sunday Roasts.

"Terrace tables will be on a first come, first served basis and any takeaways by pre order and booked collection slots. Menus and Opening Hours will be announced nearer the time..."

In the meantime, preparations are underway.

Pip said: "We'll be busy touching up our outdoor chairs and tables, putting up parasols and 2 new gazebos and generally sprucing up our decked Garden Terrace, overlooking the village church.

"Given the unpredictable Spring weather, we'll be advising customers to dress accordingly and bring their own wraps/blankets if they wish!

"Although we did takeaways during the first lockdown, this didn't prove viable this year. So we decided to wait until we could reopen somewhat."

And like other hospitality venues, Pip and landlord Dominic Way, say the venue has suffered financially from the government-imposed lockdowns.

Pip explained: "All hospitality business have taken an economic battering from reduced capacity to ensure social distancing, local restrictions and repeated closures. Despite rent reductions and business support measures and grants, most pubs and restaurants will reopen carrying debts that would not have existed had it not been for the pandemic."

However, she added: "As ever, we'll put our best foot forward and reopen with a warm welcome and exemplary covid secure measures all in place."
