Local fire crews have supported a horse owner whose animal became distressed while traveling in a horse box on the A1.

Earlier this month, the team from Oakham Fire and Rescue Station stepped in to help after a horse and owner got into trouble on the A1.

The horse became unstable in the horse box, but the team were on hand to escort the vehicle off of the road and onto side roads in search of a field where the owner and horse could calm down and recover.

The team apologised for any disruption to road users, but saved the day for horse and owner, who are okay.

The team shared: "It's not just fires that we deal with. A horse became distressed whilst in transport on the A1, and was saved from further injury by quick thinking from the owners, who asked for our assistance. The horse had become slightly trapped in vehicle, which was quickly released suffering only minor injuries. Crews from Oakham and Southern attended."

Proving that they really don't stick to just tackling blazes, the team are also getting ready to create a Remembrance Garden this November, and have enlisted the help of local knitters and crocheters to do so.

Find out more about the garden and how you can join in here.
