Following a recent blaze at Rutland Water, the team at Oakham Fire Station have shared a warning about using disposable barbecues safely this summer.
Firefighters from the local station found themselves at Normanton recently fighting an outdoor fire on the south shore of the reservoir after a disposable barbecue got out of control.
Despite the recent rain, a disposable barbecue caught light and had to be tackled by the Oakham team. No one was hurt, but this prompted the team to share a warning about the hazards of open fires and barbecues as the summer holidays commence.
A spokesperson for Oakham First Station said: "With the summer season in full swing, many of us are enjoying the outdoors and embracing the sizzle of barbecues. While it's a fantastic way to relish delicious food and quality time with loved ones, it's crucial to be mindful of the potential dangers, especially when barbecuing in rural areas."
Let's ensure we have a safe and worry-free experience by following these essential safety tips:
- Location matters: Ensure that your barbecue is positioned far away from sheds, fences, trees, shrubs, or any garden waste. These items can catch fire easily, leading to uncontrollable and hazardous situations.
- Never leave unattended: Never leave your barbecue or any cooking unattended. A moment's distraction can have severe consequences. Stay vigilant and keep a watchful eye on the grill at all times.
- Outdoor use only: Barbecues should always be used outdoors, away from enclosed spaces. Using a barbecue indoors or in enclosed areas poses a serious risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, which can be fatal. Enjoy the fresh air while cooking!
- Be prepared for emergencies: Keep a bucket of water, sand, or a garden hose nearby to tackle any unexpected emergencies. These can help extinguish small fires or cool down hot coals effectively. Being prepared is key!
- Disposable barbecue safety: If you're using disposable barbecues, make sure to follow the safety instructions provided. They often have specific guidelines that should be adhered to for safe usage. Let's prioritise safety above all else!
- No petrol or paraffin: Never use petrol or paraffin to ignite or revive your barbecue. Instead, rely only on recognized lighters or starter fuels specifically designed for use with coal and for food. Let's avoid unnecessary risks and use the right tools for the job.
- Dispose of ashes safely: After your barbecue, empty the ashes onto bare garden soil, not into dustbins or wheelie bins. Hot ashes have the potential to melt plastic and start a fire, so let's prevent any accidents by disposing of them correctly.
- Balcony barbecue alert: It's crucial to note that barbecues should never be used on balconies. The close proximity to buildings and potentially flammable materials poses a significant risk. Let's prioritise safety and find alternative grilling spaces.
- Countryside considerations: When in the countryside, it's important to be aware of your surroundings and only barbecue in designated safe areas. The risk of wildfires is significantly higher in rural settings, and we must do our part to protect our beautiful environment.
The team concluded: "Let's spread the word about these essential barbecue safety tips to ensure that everyone enjoys their summer gatherings without any accidents or harm. Remember, safety is the secret ingredient that makes every barbecue truly memorable. Stay safe, happy grilling, and have a fantastic summer!"
