A new handrail is to be installed in Uppingham to help residents and visitors negotiate trio of tricky steps more safely.

Uppingham Town Council has secured listed building consent from Rutland County Council to attach a decorative black wrought iron handrail to the Grade II Listed wall alongside the uneven steps at the western end of Leamington Terrace.

A design and access statement says: "The handrail installation will help improve the accessibility of the footpath and promote safe use of the steps.

"The handrail has been requested by a number of residents due to the steepness and irregularity of the steps.

"It is a popular footpath for residents as it cuts off a corner and a steep hill next to a busy main road.

"The handrail will help to assist foot traffic flow safely via the adjoining public footpath, thus improving the accessibility if the footpath and improving the quality of life for both local residents and visitors."

The handrail will only take 'a few hours' to fix to the ironstone wall and the footpath will remain open during the work.
