Oakham Mayor has summed up achievements during her tenure.

Cllr Sally-Anne Wadsworth spoke at the annual meeting of Oakham Town Council on Tuesday 7 May 2024.

She said: "It has been a particularly busy time over the past 12 months, and some of the highlights are the unveiling of the statue of Queen Elizabeth II, which the town council donated £5,000 towards.

"Since it was unveiled a few weeks ago, the town has been very busy with visitors coming to see the statue, using local cafés, local shops and local hotels.

"Having spoken with several businesses about the effect the statue has had on them, the general opinion is how much busier they have been.

"In my opinion this was money well spent by the town council and we look forward to more visitors in the future."

The meeting was open to the public for questions, and one person asked what plans the council had to keep the music in Cutts Close to a minimum, especially in the summer.

"We are only allowed to have 12 events each year," Coun Wadsworth replied. "And the town council has purchased a digital sound monitoring device to keep an eye on the level of the music being played there."

Money has been spent by the council on the new Hopper Bus and the street lighting.

"Both of which would cease without the town council putting funds into them", she added.
