Oakham School pupils have been 'digging in' to the celebrations for Her Majesty's Platinum Jubilee by planting trees across the campus for The Queen's Green Canopy.

With the support of Mr Henry Price, Headmaster at Oakham School, and Mr Morris, Head of the Lower School, pupils from the Lower, Middle and Upper School (10 to 18 year olds) grabbed their gardening tools and planted the trees in locations across the School where they would be able to flourish. 

The students were keen to get involved in a sustainable project at the School and learn more about planting and maintaining trees.

Henry Price said: "The Queen's Green Canopy was a fantastic opportunity for our pupils to contribute to the Jubilee celebrations and play their part in supporting the local environment and ecology."

"We were keen to get behind this planting initiative and are looking forward to seeing the trees grow and flourish in the years to come as they celebrate The Queen's legacy."

The School is also celebrating 70 years of Her Majesty the Queen by looking back on the times she has visited the campus.

The Queen first came to Oakham School in summer 1967 with the Duke of Edinburgh and was greeted by 3,000 pupils from schools across Rutland. The Oakham School Concert Band played the national anthem, and the Royal Standard was broken at the cricket pavilion's flag post.

Her Majesty then revisited Oakham School in November 1984, as the School celebrated its Quatercentenary. Accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, the royal couple spent the morning at the School, where they were given a tour around the Old Hall, the Biology Wing and Buchanans House. The Queen opened the Queen Elizabeth Theatre, and pupils performed a short 15-minute play in her honour. The theatre is still used today for many School performances.

Their most recent performance was 'Blue Stockings' which not only celebrated 50 years of co-education at the school, but showcased the talents of the School's Drama Scholars.

Further showing their community spirit, the pupils came together to raise £750 for Ukraine. This particular enterprise saw Russian, Ukrainian and British students create a pin badge to sell on campus as well as hosting a doughnut sale.
