Oakham: Top Rutland pub urges people to 'think again about hospitality'

An award-winning Rutland gastropub is urging people to 'think again about hospitality.'

The plea comes from the Olive Branch at Clipsham, which has explained the challenges it has faced with recruitment this year.

Many Rutland hospitality venues are also struggling to find staff, as they coped with the busiest summer ever as people chose to holiday in the UK, as recently reported by Nub News.

Among them, the rebranded Rutland Hall Hotel, formerly the Barnsdale Hall Hotel, is staging open days as it also seeks staff in a recruitment drive.

Earlier this year, Discover Rutland launched a job listings section on its website to help hospitality businesses find staff.

Yesterday, the Olive Branch posted on Facebook: "Over the past few months, we've spent a fair bit of money with an online recruitment site. The result? Lots of interview no-shows and last-minute cancellations. Frustrating!

"However, we've been amazed, pleased and grateful to have had a brilliant team of students working here during the summer, and now we wish them well as they head back to their studies."

The post continued: "Why do these hardworking, polite young students not want a career in hospitality? Why do those looking for jobs in hospitality apply and no-show? Why is a hospitality career in Britain not held in higher esteem?

"The answer is probably cultural. Many of us have done it, but don't want to do it.

"We are asking you to think again – hospitality is hard work but offers a magical camaraderie, the joy of making guests happy, the fun of helping them discover new drinks, ingredients and flavours, and the satisfaction of making them feel special… all these things add up to make working in a good pub or restaurant uniquely rewarding."

"Here begins our pitch. Are you interested in working somewhere where you will be valued, both by us as a business and by our guests (who are a lovely, supportive bunch)?

"We guarantee you will not be overworked and paid an excellent hourly wage, plus a share of generous tips. You need not be trained, we'll do that with you, all we ask is that you are passionate and positive.

"We also promise to give you paid holiday and value your contribution to The Olive Branch's success. We offer flexible full-time or part-time hours – to fit around family or other commitments – including day shifts, lunch shifts or evenings, Wednesday to Sunday."

The post added: "We are a family, an independent business, and we care – an awful lot. We want you to feel special, just like our customers. And we want you to enjoy the rewards of this wonderful industry.

"If you are interested, or think you might be, give us a call, send us an email or DM us for more information or just a chat."
