Today, Friday 24 February 2023, marks one year since Russia invaded Ukraine.

This was a major escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian War, which has been going on since 2014.

This unrest has driven millions of Ukrainian people from their homes to seek refuge across Europe, with many Ukrainian families being housed in the UK.

To mark the anniversary, Rutland County Council are taking part in a 1 minute silence at 11am.

The Council shared on their social media: "Friday marks one year since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine.

"Rutland remains home to more than 80 Ukrainian guests who've been welcomed here as part of our Homes4Ukraine scheme.

"We're observing a minute's silence at 11am, in tribute to all those affected by the war. We'll also be flying the Ukrainian flag outside our offices."

Oakham Baptist Church will also be hosting their weekly Ukraine Community Space today. This takes place every Friday from 3-5pm and is supported by members of the community.

For those wishing to attend a more formal service of remembrance, Stamford Churches, supported by Stamford Diversity Group, are holding a 'One Year On' event tonight, from 6:30pm, at Browne's Hospital.
