Cottesmore residents are fighting a price increase that totals hundreds of pounds a month.

Residents of Gainsborough Court in Cottesmore, Rutland, are fighting an increase from their landlord, Longhurst Group, who have increased rent by hundreds of pounds.

A private meeting has been held between the company and residents, although increased payments began in early April for the disgruntled tenants.

A Longhurst Group spokesperson said: "Our priority is to support our customers to sustain their tenancies while ensuring we provide the best possible service.

"We understand that any cost increase isn't welcome news, particularly given the other cost-of-living challenges our customers are facing.

"We recently met with customers to explain that the rent increase was calculated in line with our policy and using a government-approved formula, and that the service charges cover the actual cost of delivering services, including communal energy bills, the heating customers use in their homes, Lifeline costs and TV license charges.

"Like many housing associations our costs have grown significantly, and we've had to seriously consider all costs we incur. This includes recovering the actual amount that we're charged by energy providers for heating and electricity in communal areas, as well as the cost of heating each flat.

"Due to higher energy costs, which are out of our control, the average weekly service charges have increased from £52 to £89. On average, the total monthly cost for a one bedroom flat at Gainsborough Court has increased by £194.

"We're working with our contractors to improve energy efficiency at the scheme as a matter of urgency and would urge customers concerned about the cost increase to discuss their individual situation with us so we can better understand how we may be able to help."

This price increase has left some residents paying £900 a month for a one bed flat.

The 23 flats in the complex share a communal lounge and kitchen as well as laundry area.
