Bog Dog Running is a family-run business providing gear to runners and sporting-enthusiasts across Rutland and Stamford, from beginners to pros.

Run by Laura Bailey, Bog Dog Running Gear is a hidden gem located just off Ryhall Road, stocking a huge range of sporting equipment including clothing, bats and rackets, balls and bibs, and - of course - running gear.

The shop was set up 2 years ago by Laura, who has been working for herself since she was only 18.

Bog Dog owner, Laura, said: "I have been working for myself since I was 18 and have always been passionate about working in an environment that I had a real zest for – something I like to do in my spare time," she laughed, "or my not-very-much spare time!"

Prior to opening Bog Dog Running, Laura built up the workwear side of the company, Precision Workwear, in Bourne, where she was born and raised. Here, she also raised her two daughters, Erin (21) and Alice (18).

She got into running when Alice was only 12, and the dynamic duo took to running in the beautiful Rutland and Stamford countryside with the original 'Bog Dog' Rudy the Chocolate Labrador.

Laura said: "Running offers so much mental freedom, a great challenge, helps me get the dogs out, and has allowed me to befriend some lovely people – runners on the whole tend to be very open people who like to get you involved in their running world. It is a pleasure to supply kit to people who are vivacious and are as passionate about their gear as I am."

It also means that Laura gets to try loads of cool trainers, ultimately enabling her to help her customers pick the best gear for them, tried and tested by the in-store team.

The team in question is currently made up of Laura, alongside Erin, Laura's eldest daughter. An ex-gymnast, Erin is a strong member of the team and can offer support to customers looking for the best in running gear, as well as guiding shoppers through the range of sporting stock on offer in store.  Sarah also assists on a day to day basis, her speciality being Ultra & Trail. All of the team are strong in different areas, enable them to have a very rounded view of the different products in stock.

When Laura isn't busy running the store, she can be found out and about in the local area training for local and national running events.

She explained: "I can't sit still. There is always a new challenge to be had. In fact, our first event is coming up in May: The Grim Reaper Ultra at Grimsthorpe Castle."

This multi-distance event is set to take place at the stunning Grimsthorpe Castle Estate in South Lincolnshire. There will be a mix of estate roads, limestone tracks and grass trails, so trail shoes are recommended – and now you know where you can pick some up!

Competitors have the option of running four solo distances - 10, 40, 70 or 100 miles, with a 40 mile and 100 mile team option available too.

Grim Reaper will take place on May 20 and 21, 2023, and can be booked online. A few spaces are still available, so sign up now.

While she is busy organising the event, this is one that Laura won't be competing in, as she is running from London to Paris the following week.

Made of seriously strong stuff, Laura and 4 other runners from the popular local running group Stamford Striders, will be running from Wimbledon to Paris to raise funds for Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Families Association (SSAFA) and Parkinson's UK.

Not only do they have to run a half-marathon every day between 25 and 28 May, but they will also be camping out overnight throughout the challenge.

Laura said: "We have to sleep in a tent overnight then get up and run a half-marathon! To top it off, we're getting the overnight ferry to Paris… The running will be easy, the lack of sleep will be the tough bit!

"It's for a great cause though, as one of our running team is ex-military, and two have experienced Parkinson's within the family.

"It will be worthwhile, and fun to see how we get on – and how we're going to get all the kit and people in the car!"

Between them, the team have smashed their £2,000 target, and now hope to raise £3,000. Find out more and donate on Laura's fundraising page.

Laura added: "We know that times are tough, but if anyone can donate we would be incredibly grateful."

In the meantime, you can find Laura at Bog Dog in Gwash Way, where she provides support to those looking to get into running, experienced athletes, and fellow trail runners.

The team also offer a unique 'gait analysis' service hosted by Arion. Using sensors on insoles inside your trainers, Laura can analyse your individual running style, feedback on your needs, and help you select the perfect pair for trainers.

This service lasts for 45 minutes to 1 hour and allows users to test multiple pairs of trainers – and unlocks a discount on shoes when you buy in store.

On top of Arion, the store stocks major brands, from Saucony, Hoka, Montane, Maurten and more.

Laura added: "Brooks is another brand coming to the store soon, as per request from our regulars, and a brand I have come to know many people love.

"People like to see that people selling the gear are involved in running, because we have a real understanding, we know the pitfalls and gains.

I think running keeps people sane! Had a bad day? Go for a run. Had a good day? Go for a run. Whether you are new to the sport, or more experienced than us, we can help you out."
