The Rutland and Melton MP has shared her support of the 'sniff test' method as Marks & Spencers follow other supermarkets as they remove use by dates from their milk.

Conservative MP Alicia Kearns has spoken on the BBC's Politics Live about her long-term use of the sniff test to ensure that she is not wasting milk.

Ms Kearns said: "I have about 100 dairy farmers in my constituency so I got o a vending machine Vine Farm Dairy - it is honestly the best milk you have ever drunk in your life - but it's a vending machine so there are no dates or anything like that, and you smell it, and if its safe you drink it.

"For me, we shouldn't be wasting milk. It is precious and there is so much work that goes into creating it."

Morrisons and now M&S are trialling the 'sniff test, in which the use by date is removed from the milk so that buyers must sniff to see if the milk is still good to use.

M&S have removed the dates from their RSPCA Assured Select Farms British and organic fresh milk.

This is an attempt to reduce wastage. So far M&S have already removed use by dates from over 300 fruit and veg items, as they plan to reach net-zero waste by 2040.
