MP 'disgusted' over Rutland Zoo arson attack

By The Editor 8th Jul 2021

Rutland MP Alicia Kearns says its is 'disgusting' that the new owners of Rutland Zoo have suffered an arson attack.

Joanna Aldwinckle says she was shocked to discover someone had purposely started a fire in her car while it was parked at the attraction. Staff were able to put out the fire before it destroyed her car.

Joanna, who took over the former Bugtopia last year, with plans for expansion of the attraction, fears animal rights activists may be involved,

Police are appealing for witnesses to the incident that happened last Thursday morning at the not-for-profit at 10.50am.

The Zoo said on Facebook last week : " We are still opening tomorrow/Friday most importantly.. however due to a attempted arson on the owners vehicle approx 10.50 this morning outside of the zoo we are having CCTV fitted in and around the zoo.

"Our hero's at MG Electricals are coming to save the day, to cover all areas, so if you are planning to visit please be aware that there may be men up ladders and vans outside.

"This follows a couple of recent incidents aimed at or inside the actual zoo recently. A huge thank you to Leicestershire Police for a incredibly fast response too and they are now looking to it."

The zoo added: "We wanted to be clear that we are still opening but wanted to let you know in case."

Mrs Kearns said this week: "This is simply disgusting. Even more so if the fire was an intentional act by an so-called animal rights activist.

"I went to Rutland Zoo a few weeks ago – these are great people and they are doing an amazing job saving animals. Only one animal in the whole zoo isn't rescued."

If anyone has any information, please contact the police on 101, quoting 21*366317.
