The local pubs and attractions are stepping up this weekend, bringing a host of great live events to Oakham residents, including an open mic night, sports screenings, a charity quiz night, and intriguing local exhibitions.

  1. Open Mic Night

This Sunday the 16th of January, Open Mic Night returns to The Grainstore Brewery.

Whether you're a seasoned performer or want to take your singing in the shower one step further, The Grainstore's Open Mic Night welcomes you.

The event starts at 5pm but those wanting to perform are encouraged to come down early to ensure that they get their names on the list.

Entry is free, although the drinks are not, so bring some money to treat yourself to some of the great local beers, spirits and soft drinks on offer.

Hosted by local legend CJ Hatt, this is one not to miss.

  1. The Crown Tavern sports screenings
The Crown Tavern is a great little pub situated in Crown Walk in the centre of Oakham. This weekend, Lindsay and The Crown team welcome you to join them for another great selection of sports screenings on offer. Friday 14th January:

Saturday 15th January:

Heineken Champions Cup Rugby Connacht vs Leicester Tigers 3.15pm KO (BT Sports)

Aston Villa vs Manchester United 5.30pm KO (SKY) Sunday 16th January:

West Ham United vs Leeds United 2pm KO (SKY)

Tottenham vs Arsenal 4.30pm KO (SKY) For those in search of a cheeky bonus event, The Crown are also running a fundraising quiz night on Wednesday the 19th of January. Tickets are only £3 per player, and all money raised will go to EMICS. East Midlands Immediate Care Scheme consists of a network of volunteer doctors who provide first base, pre-hospital care to those who have been injured or need emergency medical care. This life-saving scheme sees doctors dispatched with ambulances to assist on the scene, in all weather conditions, 356 days a year. Head down to The Crown on January the 19th at 8pm to support this incredibly worthy cause.
  1. Rutland County Museum

Promoted as Rutland's hidden treasure, Rutland County Museum is a fantastic local attraction tucked away opposite the council buildings on Catmos Street.

The museum is free to visit and is open from 10am until 4pm on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

At the museum, visitors can explore Rutland's local history, archaeology, rural life and trade, crime and punishment, and much more. On top of this, there are a host of interactive exhibitions to keep the kids entertained.

While the permanent exhibitions remain in place all year round, the museum is currently playing host to a temporary exhibition, Sent with Love! 100 Years of Christmas and Valentine Cards, which explores the history of greeting cards from the 1850s to the 1950s.

It includes over 100 Christmas and New Year cards, featuring humorous, novelty and traditional designs by some of the most significant early publishers. Around 50 Valentine cards are also on show including some charming Victorian examples with paper lace and gilt decoration.

This unexpected, charming exhibition only runs until the 29th of January, so be sure to get your visit in soon to avoid missing out.
