Rutland Community Fridge is celebrating a tasty milestone this week as the team announce that the community project has helped save 25 tonnes of food from going to landfill.
Rutland Community Fridge is run by Root-and-Branch Out, a local food and education charity working towards supporting residents and young people across Rutland.
The project sees volunteers collect food waste from local shops, bakeries and businesses to give to the local community on a pay-as-you-feel basis.
In the three years that the project has been running, hundreds of residents have used the scheme either to help feed their families, or to prevent food waste.
These users, as well as the dedicated team of volunteers, have managed to save a whopping 25 tonnes of food waste both in and around Rutland.
The team said: "A big thank you to everyone involved, from the volunteers out every Thursday night - to all those who have visited the fridge!"
With the cost of living crisis still impacting residents in and around Rutland, more and more people from the rural county are relying upon local projects and community fridges to feed their families.
The Rutland Community Fridges are no exception to this, the Oakham and Uppingham branches seeing queues of local people turning up each week for assistance and sustenance.
The Oakham Community Fridge runs from Oakham Station on a Friday from 10 - 11:30am, and the Uppingham Fridge can be found at Uppingham Town Hall from 1:30 - 3pm on Friday.
As well as saving food waste, the team hope to continue providing their service to all who need it within the local community.
