Following a number of anonymous posts on local social media pages and groups, a Trustee from Rutland Foodbank has urged those facing food poverty to reach out.

A number of anonymous posts were made on Oakham and Rutland Facebook groups across Christmas and into the New Year by individuals who were struggling to feed their families - particularly following the financial pressure of Christmas. This encouraged a local volunteer to speak out, urging Rutland residents to ask for help.

Dee took to social media to share her experience: "I am a Trustee at Rutland Foodbank... To residents in a difficult position, I would like to advise you of the route to using the Foodbank. Please DO use us we are very discreet and we deliver the food to you so no need to come into the Foodbank.

"The best route is to call Citizens Advice on 01572 723494 or go onto their website.

"They will ask a series of questions, making sure you are receiving all the benefits and help you are eligible for. If you are employed you too can speak to them because utility bills, debt etc. can put you into food poverty. If they assess you as being in need of a food voucher they will send one to us electronically. We will call you, discuss any allergies or other requirements and pack for you. Our clients usually receive their food the same day.

"So if you need us, please use us, or if you know someone in need please encourage them to get in touch. We desperately do not want people to struggle and go without food."

Across the country, social media users are also being warned to remain wary of scammer asking for money in a similar fashion on social media, often using children or pets to gain sympathy from their victims.

As such, if you plan on helping someone local access the food and resources they need, always be sure that they are genuine ad not a scammer.

If you are unsure, direct them to local resources, such as food banks and the Citizens Advice Bureau.
