Rutland Morris will be performing their annual Mummers' Tour on Thursday 11 December.

They will be bringing a traditional festive play to two venues in Rutland, featuring new actors for 2025.

They will be doing their Mummers Tour and Dancing from 7pm on Thursday 11 December stopping at 7.45pm at Millstone in Ryhall and 9pm at Empingham Sports and Social Club.

Mummers were bands of men and women in the early Medieval era who would dress in bright clothes and costumes during the festive period. They would serenade people outside their homes or go inside and join the party.

Despite being popular in the early Medieval period, Mummers traditions date back as far as the Romans in some places.

Mummers' plays are traditional folk plays where amateur actors would dress up and perform without scripts or planned details in houses, pubs or in the street during festive periods.

Rutland Morris will also be taking part in their annual Boxing Day Mummers and dancing, visiting the following places across the county:

  • 11am - The Horse and Jockey in Manton,
  • 12pm - Market Place in Uppingham,
  • 1pm - The Crown in Uppingham (room permitting)
