Rutland rallies round to help vulnerable resident

Rutlanders have rallied round to help a partially-sighted and vulnerable resident.

The move follows an appeal posted on social media to fund security improvement to help a man called Jon, who suffered a break-in at his Oakham home.

The Rural Crime Rutland group posted on Facebook: "We recently shared a post from Jon, who's flat was entered by a stranger in Oakham. We spoke to the Police and they have closed the case after the initial visit.

"Unfortunately Jon still doesn't feel safe in his own home and due to him being partially sighted and needing a guide dog this must be particularly scary. I believe a lot of the community in his area know Jon and look out for it him. This was obvious after his post on a local Facebook group.

"This is an appeal for our great community of Rutland to help Jon. He's been asking the housing association to fix the communal door on his flat after it was vandalised.

"Yet nothing has been done! I think between us all we can get the communal door fixed and I think we can get Jon a doorbell camera or CCTV (Jon has offered to pay for one but I think between us we can cover that small cost). We will need to check with the housing association first."

The posted added: "If anyone feels they can help out with this bit of charity we will be very grateful. We feel it's more important to prevent crime than tackle it after."

A follow-up post continued: "We have had such a positive reaction to this and we can now confirm after pressure from Emma at Rutland Housing (RCC) and Joe Lloyd (Rutland Police), the housing association in Nottingham that own the building have promised to get the communal door repaired next week.

"We aren't done just yet though. We are waiting to hear back from the building owners as to whether Jon would be allowed a doorbell camera installed. If this is the case we will push on getting one paid for and installed for Jon."

On Friday, Rural Crime Rutland said the fundraiser had exceeded £120, so it could fun d other security items.

It continued: "Communal door will be repaired next week by the housing authorities

"PCSO Nicole visited Jon today and she is going to ring the housing office to have them put a combination lock on his back gate and a pressure pad by his back door with an alarm. (Thank you Nicole ðŸ™)

"In a world where so many negatives come from social media, this just shows you it can have a positive community effect.

"I can't say thank you enough ðŸ™"
