Uppingham Town Council is revisiting the idea of creating a community hub.

The proposal has been mooted several times over the past few years and was one of the initiatives included in the town council's failed bid for £5.2m of the Government's Future High Streets Funding last year.

Now, with the council receiving community infrastructure levy (CIL0 money the community hub idea has come back to the table for consideration.

Mayor Stephen Rozak told Oakham Nub News: "While the town council is not awash with money we are now receiving CIL money associated with housing development going on in Uppingham and we should be considering how that money could be spent.

"The rules under CIL mean that this money is time-limited and if not spent by Uppingham will go back to Rutland County Council if we do not identify what to spend it on locally.

"The council has agreed to evaluate the feasibility of the concept of a community hub in Uppingham and a working group has been set up to determine the terms of reference, timescale and budget and report this back to full council in October.

"Just a few of the potential ideas that have been put forward for a community hub in the past include an open area which residents, council and maybe businesses can use, a youth centre and absorbing the library and bringing it up-to-date.

Coun Rozak explained that if the terms of reference are agreed by full council then the working group will explore the full extent of ideas of a community hub concept and report back to council with its views in due course - possibly early in the new year.

"Making it a reality might take one or two years," he added.
