Crime and Carry Ons: the life and work of Edmund Crispin, Golden Age crime writer and film composer

Join us at Oakham Library for a talk with music by his biographer David Whittle.

Bruce Montgomery (1921-1978), aka Edmund Crispin, was a composer and author of detective fiction. Moving in the same circles as the likes of Kingsley Amis, Malcolm Arnold and Philip Larkin, he contributed greatly to British artistic life in the mid-1900s. As a composer he wrote concert music but made his mark more through the scores for many films, including the early Carry Ons and the series started by Doctor in the House. As an author he wrote nine entertaining novels in the Golden Age style featuring his eccentric sleuth Professor Gervase Fen. His biographer, David Whittle, talks about Montgomery's life and work and will include examples of his music.

Tickets £2 (including a glass of wine). Tel. 01572 722918.
