What to Look for With a Wasp Nest – And What Not to Do
Summer's here – and so are the wasps! While a few buzzing about the garden is normal, a nest on or near your home can be a different story. Here's a quick guide to help you spot the signs early and stay safe:
Signs You May Have a Wasp Nest:
- Increased wasp activity: Noticing a lot more wasps than usual in one area? That's often the first sign.
- Visible nest: Wasp nests are papery and often shaped like a football or a teardrop. You might spot one under roof eaves, in sheds, lofts, wall cavities, or even underground.
- Buzzing sounds: Hear a faint buzzing coming from behind a wall or in the loft? That could be an active nest.
- Wasps entering holes/cracks: Watch for wasps repeatedly going in and out of small gaps – they may be using it as a nest entrance.
What Not to Do:
- Don't poke or disturb the nest: Wasps can become aggressive if they feel threatened, and their stings are no joke—especially around children or pets.
- Don't block their exit: It might seem like a quick fix, but blocking entry points can trap wasps inside your home, forcing them to find other ways out.
- Don't try DIY sprays on large nests: Store-bought sprays can aggravate wasps and are usually ineffective against established colonies.
What You Should Do:
Stay calm, keep your distance, and call a pest control service to safely deal with the nest.
Remember – the earlier a nest is dealt with, the easier and safer it is to remove.
