Melton Mowbray local Georgia Holt has found herself in the middle of a dramatic medal win at the Commonwealth Games this week after being told that she and her teammate, Sophie Unwin could not claim the bronze medal despite coming third in the the women's tandem B sprint on Friday the 31st of July.

Georgia Holt, 22, who hails from Melton Mowbray, narrowly missed out on being picked in the Great Britain team after finishing fifth in national trials, but has since been called the 'comeback queen' after her success at the Commonwealth Games this year.

Georgia and her teammate took third spot in the women's tandem B sprint on Friday.

However, they were informed they would not be awarded a bronze medal because only four teams took part in the race, with the fifth team unable to compete due to injury. Under competition rules, if only four teams take part in an event, only gold and silver medals are awarded.

The pair then borrowed bronze medals from their teammates and took their chance, posing on the podium for photos despite this ruling. They were later fined £172 each by UCI, the governing body, for 'protesting' the decision.

However, this week, the pair won silver medals at the Women's Tandem B Time Trial, which hopefully makes up for their tearful snub last week.

On winning their silver medal, Unwin said: "I think we both came into today thinking, 'New day, new race' but we also wanted to get on the podium and we did exactly what we wanted to do. It's been a rollercoaster of emotions but we've just been resetting. It's a new day and we go again."

Holt added: "She's tenacious. We woke up on Saturday new women. Had we known we weren't racing for bronze we maybe would have saved the legs for today."

Congratulations to these two athletes for their success and ongoing determination.
