An Oakham supermarket could soon become home to a new fitness centre, including saunas and an ice bath, changing rooms, studios, a juice bar and gym equipment.

Central Co-op has ring-fenced a part of its Burley Road building for the potential gym, and is on the hunt for potential tenants looking to occupy the space for over a year.

And a tenant may have been found.

Method Health Club has applied for planning permission from Rutland County Council to change the use of part of the building, with the hopes of opening in 2025.

Method Health Club Ltd. also hopes to provide personal training and fitness classes from the Co-op in Oakham.

View the application on the Rutland County Council website by searching 2024/0650/FUL.

This comes following the closure of Catmose Sports Centre, some members of which aim to launch a fitness co-operative. Read more here.

Catmose Sports Centre closed following a decision made by Rutland County Council to no longer subsidise the centre, located at Huntsman Drive, and the failure to secure a provider that could run the centre at nil cost to the council.

As such, news that a new gym may be heading to Oakham will be embraced by many local fitness enthusiasts.
