Today, Tuesday the 28th of June 2022, the Office for National Statistics have released the results from the 2021 census, and Rutland's population has increased at a higher rate than the nationwide average.

What is a census?

The census, run by the Office for National Statistics, is a once-in-a-decade survey that gives us the most accurate estimate of all the people and households in England and Wales. It has been carried out every ten years since 1801, with the exception of 1941.

In Spring 2021, Rutland residents were asked to submit information for this census. Find out more about this here.

Results from the census are available 12 months after the survey, all culminating in the release today, Tuesday the 28th of June 2022.

How does Rutland compare nationally?

National data shows that the nation's population is now the biggest it has ever been at 59.6 million people.

But with the national growth rate of 6.3 per cent, the population in Rutland has grown faster over the last decade.

In Rutland, the population size has increased by 9.7 per cent, from 37,369 in 2011 to approximately 41,000 in 2021. This is higher than the overall increase for England which is 6.6 per cent, where the population grew by nearly 3.5 million to 56,489,800.

The 2011 census showed that the population of Rutland had increased by 2,806 since the 2001 census, suggesting that this is a common trend, but is it one that is nationwide.

In 2021, Rutland ranked 307th for total population out of 309 local authority areas in England, maintaining the same position it held a decade ago.

What happens next?

The ONS aims to publish all other 2021 Census data within two years of the census being held.

The rounded estimates for local authorities published today will be followed by more detailed data in between autumn and winter this year.

This will include information on faith, sexuality, and more detailed specifics.

Information on education and housing will also be released.

As of 2021, Rutland is the fourth least densely populated of the East Midlands' 35 local authority areas, with an area equivalent to around one football pitch per resident (image courtesy of ONS)
